Finding Jobs In Bad Times

The most basic steps for success in career searching do not change, no matter how bad the economy gets. However, the amount of time and effort that you must put into job-hunting does. Here are some essential tips for making your job search succeed during a recession:

1. Always start with a plan of action. Before you start searching, you should decide on several things in advance: the types of positions you want, the employers or industries that you prefer, and your strategy for attaining that desired position.

2. Take a multi-pronged approach. Don't rely on just one technique for getting a job. For example, aside from checking the online job boards, ask at alumni associations, professional organizations, and so on. Practice cold-calling. And always use your network of contacts.

3. Stay positive. Yes, it may sound cliché, but it's true nonetheless. You'll experience both good and bad days. When your ego gets hurt, don't get discouraged. In a recession, it takes much longer for almost everyone to find a new job. Put the setbacks behind you and keep focused on your goal.

4. Proper preparation is key. Writing good resumes and cover letters and preparing for interviews are all critical factors in a successful job search.

5.  Don't let bad news stop you. Hearing dire forecasts about the state of the economy can be discouraging, but there's no reason to let up in your search. In fact, many industries that announce mass layoffs today are looking for tomorrow's new hires.

6.  Always follow up on your leads. Until you know for sure that a certain job has been filled or is otherwise unavailable, check up periodically on employers and inquire about your application (but do stop short of annoying them). When the job market is bad, it's the persistent and patient seekers who usually succeed.

7. Consider temporary work. If you're having difficulties with your finances, a contractual or temporary job can help you pay the bills until you find a better position.

These are just some of the many tips we've got for you. Make sure you check back again for our second part on surviving a bad job market.
